The First “HOMAGE” International Guitar Competition  will take place on October 12, 13 and 14, 2016, in the city of Talca, Maule Region, Chile, with the participation of 30 Chilean and foreign guitar players.

The jury will be composed of prominent national and international figures from the world of music.

One of the awards will be a concert guitar, donated by renowned Chilean luthier Carlos López.

As part of the program of this first HOMAGE competition, the musicians will have to play a work composed for the occasion by Chilean composer Alberto Cumplido.

GUSTAVO BECERRA-SCHMIDT

The first edition of the International Guitar Competition, Maule Region, Chile, is dedicated to the memory of Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt, renowned Chilean composer and musicologist.

Born in Temuco, Becerra-Schmidt was a very prolific musician, composing hundreds of works in different styles, such as folk songs, large-scale cantatas, symphonies and oratorios.

Among the cantatas, La Araucana and Lord Cochrane de Chile stand out, as well as the Macchu Picchu oratorio, with texts by Neruda, the Concerto for flute and strings and the harp concert. In his catalog, the electroacoustic works are also important.

Becerra was a highly regarded Professor and important Chilean composers were among his students, like Luis Advis, Gabriel Brncic, Fernando García, Sergio Ortega and Cirilo Vila.
